Fernando Couto made his debut with the Portuguese shirt on November 26th 1986 in Amiens, against France. He was then 17 years old and he was called up to the Under-18 National Team. He played 22 matches in the youth National Teams (11 as Under-18 and 11 as Under-20), of which the most memorable were those he played in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, where the Portuguese Under-20 National Team became World Champion. In December 1990 he made his debut in the AA National Team, under Carlos Queiroz. Since then, Fernando Couto has had six other coaches in the National Team: Nelo Vingada, António Oliveira (twice), Artur Jorge, Humberto Coelho, Agostinho Oliveira and now Luiz Felipe Scolari.

Fernando Couto has 110 AA caps (57 wins, 30 draws, 23 losses; 203 goals for and 90 against). He scored 8 goals and entered four major international competitions (Euro 96, in England, Euro 2000, in Belgium and Holland, World Cup 2002, in Japan and Korea, and Euro 2004, in Portugal).
